Synopsis:
This workshop will get you up to speed on Istio via a hands-on tour.I will cover what the Istio service mesh is, and then you will work through installing Istio into a Kubernetes cluster and then deploy and configure a microservice application.After completing this workshop, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the architecture and components of Istio
  • Deploy Istio on a Kubernetes cluster
  • Expose an application using an Istio gateway
  • Use traffic routing for blue-green and canary deployments
  • Use Grafana, Zipkin, and Kiali for service observability
  • Understand the basics of security in Istio and control access to your workloads

Requirements for the lab: Basic understanding of Kubernetes, Docker, and Linux command line. Laptop with curl, docker, kubectl and istioctl installed.

He uses Istio every day, including in multicluster environments, and has made open source contributions to Istio. Liam has wide range of expertise over the last decade, from architecture, global scale distributed systems at Google, to web & mobile apps, and embedded software.
