Microservices or a New Monolith?
Microservices solve scalability issues but introduce more complexity compared to traditional monoliths. They require managing distributed systems, integrations, and state, which makes development more challenging. Software engineering challenges arise, including complex integrations and stateful system management. These issues lead to increased development pain, code duplication, and inefficiencies. To address these challenges, new solutions offer a development experience similar to monolithic architectures. Stateful frameworks like Temporal enable workflow management and provide RPC-like capabilities. Recreating the Monolithic Experience This raises the question: Is this still microservices, or a redefined monolith? The new paradigm combines platform + microservices = the modern monolith.
